Like big eyes....Is the a universal concept of facial beauty (science-based)?
There is absolute beauty and there is universal human attractiveness,
which are not the same.
The simpler concept of the 2 is universal human attractiveness.
Universal human attractiveness is based upon evolution-derived
preferences that are common to all humans. The preferred traits
are in some way beneficial to survival and prosperity, though not
always in obvious ways.
The preferred facial traits in males are:
1. a wide, robust jaw
2. a bony nose
3. thick eyebrows
The preferred facial traits in females are:
1. eyes that are large and far apart
2. large flesh of the upper cheeks
3. projecting lips
The universal human attractive traits of males are beneficial to the
functions of hunting and fighting. The universal human attractive traits
of females are beneficial to the functions of creating and caring for
children. Eyes that are large and far apart serve to enhance night
vision (such as in caves). The average female has better night vision
than the average male. Males can not have large eyes because they
are too vulnerable to damage.
Absolute beauty is the abstract mathematical trait of fineness, which
can apply to anything visual (and audio as well), not just humans.
Traits of fineness do occur in some humans, both in the faces and in
the bodies. Such traits include square, rectangular, and right-triangular
geometrical forms, mathematical proportions (such as 1-to-1),
convolutions, smallness of terminal areas, fractals, and textures.
The opposite property to fine beauty is crude vulgarity. As with fineness,
crudeness is an abstract mathematical trait that can apply to anything
visual or audio, and, like beauty, it often occurs in human faces and
bodies. Such traits include convexity, and largeness of terminal areas.
The occurrence of the traits of beauty and vulgarity in human forms is
the result of the preferences of the population, and those preferences
are determined by their character traits (i.e. if their mindset is fine or
crude). Character is in turn determined by the evolutionary psychological
